My First Interview

I'm Ramalingam Raghavan,  an engineer by profession and board gamer by passion.
I've been playing board games since I was a kid, and in 2012 I was introduced to the "modern" board games that were popular in Germany and the United States.
I've been hosting modern board games at my place since 2013, and I started my MEETUP group in 2014.

As of now I own around 200 board games, and here is the list of my collection.

I prefer heavy thinky Euros and recently have developed a liking towards war games.

I was introduced to board games in the early 1990's. Apart from the traditional board games like Business, Snakes & Ladders, and so on, I had played Game of the States and Scotland Yard.

In the late 90's I was gifted RISK and also introduced to unique card games like Bohnanza, UNO, Pictionary, Taboo, Boggle, Hurricane (Todays Take5 / 6 Nimmt) by my Uncle.

Due to my College/Profession, there was a break between 1999 and 2010.
In 2010, I got the opportunity to reflect on my past experiences and rekindle my long-dormant passion for board games.
I began buying back the games I had as a kid, amassing a collection of roughly 25 games.

I first heard of the Ticket to Ride board game in 2012, but I never got to see it. After that, I researched online and purchased my first board game, Ticket To Ride: Marklin, followed by Catan, and so on. I currently own around 200 board games.

My initial tiny collection

I was interviewed by from CHENNAI LIVE 104.8 FM about my unique interest just a few months after establishing my Meetup. Since then, I've been hosting board games at my place on a regular basis.

I've met a lot of amazing folks and had a great time with them.

This was the first time I had a consistent gaming group with comparable interests, and it was a lot of fun.

There were also marathon sessions, some lasted 30 hours, some three days.

In the meantime I also got in touch with another gaming group where monthly events were being conducted, which is now The Board Game Lounge.

In 2018, I was introduced to Convo@C20, a café that encourages discussion without the use of electronics.

I began hosting board games there, which resulted in the community growing.

2018 was the year of board game cafes, three cafes sprung up in Chennai.

It was also the time when my gaming group became inconsistent owing to personal obligations.

I helped with the beta-playtest of Nights of Fire: Battle for Budapest designed by Brian Train & David Turczi. A sequel for one my most favorite Days of Ire: Budapest 1956.

My initial plans of running a board game café did not materialize due to various reasons.

So I had this notion to help promote the hobby, and with the help of my core group, it came to fruition.

Phew!!! For now my team is supporting from the background. Will announce my team as soon as possible.
